The Best Novels Set in Austria for Arts-Loving Travelers

I set my second novel, A Woman of Note, in Vienna in the 1830s, which meant spending a lot of time researching the city’s extraordinary musical culture and the composers who shaped it.

That research sent me down a rabbit hole of fiction set in Austria, and I emerged with strong opinions about which novels are worth your time before or during a visit.

Many of the novels on this list relate directly to the arts, from Klimt to Mozart to Beethoven. Austria’s vibrant cultural life, especially in Vienna, has inspired countless writers, including me.

Several are set in the late 18th century, when Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven walked the streets of Vienna, or at the end of the 19th century, when figures such as Klimt and Mahler shaped the city’s artistic identity.
