View of Bruges in Belgium

Belgium

Belgium tends to get overshadowed by its flashier European neighbors, but that’s exactly what makes it worth your time.

This is a country that packs an extraordinary amount into a small space: medieval city centers that look unchanged since the 15th century, some of the finest art museums in Europe, a comic strip culture that takes itself just seriously enough, and chocolate and beer that Belgians will tell you, with good reason, are unmatched anywhere on earth.

As an arts-focused traveler, I find Belgium a rewarding destination. The Flemish masters, including van Eyck, Memling, and Bruegel, worked here centuries before tourism existed, and their paintings still hang in the cities where they were made.

Bruges is one of the most perfectly preserved medieval cities in the world. Brussels punches well above its weight for museums and architecture. And lovely Ghent rewards a night and a day.

Planning a trip to Belgium? Start here and let the chocolate and Flemish masters do the rest.
